The following programs are provided to offer the best implementations for working with students.

Getting Back on Track:  Helping the Dr-railed, Depressed and Discouraged Student Re-gain the Ground They Have Lost.

Students who face painful life situations on a daily basis often lose their academic footing and find themselves failing classes they are more than capable of passing.  Once the failing begins, the student gives up on the possibility of getting back on track.  This program helps educators develop practical support strategies, which can help these students experience hope by outlining for them a specific path back to achievement and passing grades.

The Bridge From Rage To Reason: Coaching Traumatized Children to Think Before They Act

Using a simple model of the brain, participants will learn how to help children and adolescents move from an emotional reaction to a thinking response. This will include the following: 1) The psych/social factors necessary before a constructive response to discipline can occur. 2) How trauma and loss create "futureless" thinking and self-defeating decision making. 3) To recognize how adult communication styles encourage or discourage behavior compliance. 4) How to counteract "futureless" thinking by teaching children how to connect here and now behavior with future consequences. 5) How to create a behavior change plan which teaches new and healthy behavior skills instead of relying on ineffective punishment to change behavior. 6) How to recognize emotional antecedents and origins of negative behavior and initiate effective intervention strategies. 7) How to identify behavior incentives and consequences most likely to effect change. 8) How to "walk them through the thinking process" using a communication method that encourages appropriate behavior and positive decision making. 9) How recognize and respond effectively to defiance, resistance or incompetence when behavior change does not occur. 10) How to recognize and respond effectively to signs of personal or professional burn-out.

The Language of Motivation:  Words, Phrases and Communication Techniques for Improving Performance and Achieving Academic Success.

The power of language to encourage or discourage a faltering student cannot be underestimated.  Choosing the right words, phrases and techniques for motivating students can and will improve performance and achievement.  Guidelines for how and when to talk to a non-performing student will be discussed along with suggestions for using goal oriented language with all students.

Does Your Discipline Policy Work? Assessing and Modifying Discipline Programs.

“If it doesn’t teach a skill, it is not discipline”. This simple power-packed approach explains how punishment can sometimes waste valuable time and get in the way of effective discipline.  It provides guidelines for assessing the efficacy of current discipline policies.  It provides strategies for protecting the teaching environment from unnecessary disruption.

Dream Building:  Empowering students to set and achieve goals.

Goal orientation is a learned skill, which many students have not been taught.  This program outlines strategies for helping even the most “in the moment only” student begin to think about the “how to ” of setting and achieving positive personal goals both during and after their high school experience.

Successful Strategies for Dealing with Discipline Resistant Students

This program identifies the psychological profile of the "discipline resistant" student and teaches behavior management skills designed to promote effective response to disrespectful, defiant and disruptive behavior.

Motivating the Unmotivated

Effectively motivating and encouraging unmotivated students to succeed is a learned skill. This program provides educators with strategies for positively engaging the “just doesn’t care” student. Understanding what is important to a student and communicating their value to you and the community will encourage them to work well and productively. The KCRR method taught in this workshop enables teachers to develop an individualized motivational strategy for each student.

“Helping the Struggling Teacher”

This class is intended for administrators to learn how to deal with the issues of a struggling teacher. Guidelines for knowing the difference between support and supervision, and motivating techniques for distressed/discouraged teachers will be taught. Verbal strategies for addressing performance issues, and follow up strategies that you can use right away. Guidelines for providing administrative support with behavior issues. And so much more…

Discipline or Punishment: What Works and What Doesn't

It’s difficult to know what to do with a child who is depressed, living in chaos and trauma, and bringing it in to the classroom. Learn how to identify and help depressed children. Here, you will learn what to do and what NOT to do with these students. Learn in-class alternative learning strategies for failing students. Get good guidelines and alternatives to removing students from the classroom. And much more…

Creating Safety: How to Identify and Respond to the Potentially Dangerous Student

This program describes behavior signs and symptoms of emotional vulnerability or volatility in students. It outlines safe strategies for positive and constructive communication with these students and offers suggestions for implementing effective interventions.

“Who Is Paying Your Energy Bill?” How to Protect Your Personal Energy Supply from Burnout and Exhaustion.

This program helps educators and professionals recognize the difference between physical exhaustion and emotional energy depletion. It shows the impact of personal energy supplies on health, attitude, and performance. There are many factors that deplete emotional vigor and resilience. Many strategies for assessing personal energy and avoiding enervating interactions will be learned. Development of a positive personal energy management system will be taught along with the key elements necessary for revitalizing when exhaustion threatens.

Why Can't We Solve This Problem?

This program is designed to teach advanced communication strategies for times when communications breakdown and nothing seems to work with students, parents, or colleagues. The program provides insight and skill building.

Testimonies

I attended the HSTW Conference in Kentucky and just wanted you to know how much I enjoyed your presentations! I am a firm believer that these summer training sessions are the inspiration and motivation shot-in-the-arm that we need to begin a new school year. So often these sessions miss their target, are dry and uninformative. You are a breath of fresh air. I laughed, took notes, bought your books and went away from the conference wanting more! Thank you so much. I would really appreciate being on any mailing list you have and also purchasing your new book as soon as it is available. Hope to hear from you and see you in future conferences!

I just want to let you know how much my faculty enjoyed your presentation. Everyone was full of compliments for you. They appreciated your empathy for them! They would like for you to come back. They want to hear more! You did an outstanding job explaining to them about how the brain works. They are eager to learn more. They all left the session with a clearer understanding of difficult children and with some practical ideas to use in their classrooms. You read a crowd well and respond accordingly. Thanks again for an outstanding presentation.

Safe and Effective Strategies for Defusing the Hostile Student

This program instructs teachers how to identify the early warning signals of confrontational behavior, how to use non-confrontational language and listening skills to prevent the escalation of a volatile situation, and how to make appropriate intervention before the situation becomes explosive.
